ABOUT MUSEUM
Brief History
In 1973, the Archaeology and Museum unit was established in Goa. A small museum opened in a rented building at St. Inez on September 29, 1977. It relocated to Patto on June 18, 1996, inaugurated by the President of India. Since June 2017, the entire collection has found its home in the Old Secretariat in Panaji.
About the Building
The Museum is housed in the Old Secretariat, a historical monument in Panaji, Goa. Once known as the ‘Idalcao Palace’ or Adil Shah’s palace, it later served as the official residence for viceroys after the Portuguese moved the capital to Panaji in the 18th Century. Following Goa’s liberation in 1961, the building functioned as the Secretariat and assembly hall until 2000.
